IMO is holding a Global Workshop on the NextWave Seafarers (NWS) initiative to mark the official launch of Phase 2 of the initiative, implemented in partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in collaboration with Bahri, Saudi Arabia’s national shipping line.
Building on the pilot phase, NWS Phase 2 aims to expand onboard training opportunities for cadets from developing countries, including Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs). The initiative seeks to train a minimum of 30 cadets, with a target of 50% women, while addressing barriers to entering the seafaring profession.
The workshop will present the initiative’s achievements to date, share lessons and practical insights from the pilot phase and explore how shipping companies and Member States can contribute to expanding cadet training opportunities. It will also introduce a partnership model designed to encourage more shipping companies to provide onboard training placements.
